The
Base Aérea nº 6 is located close to the city of
Montijo on the south bank of the Tagus River. It was officially put
into service on 2nd January 1953 with the establishment of the
“Sacadura Cabral Naval Aviation Centre”. After the
reorganization of the Portuguese armed forces in the year 1952 all
naval and army aviation units were placed under the control of the Air
Force. Consequently Montijo became airbase No. 6 on 2nd of June 1954. Today
BA6 houses five flying units, the Esquadra 502
“Elefantes” with their brand-new Casa CN.295, a
type that is currently in the delivery stage, the Esquadra 501
“Bisontes” with its Hercules C-130H and Hercules
C-130H-30, the Esquadra 504 “Linces” with the
Falcon 20 and Falcon 50 VIP transport aircraft, that however mostly
based on the commercial airport Lisbon Portela, the helicopter Squadron
Esquadra 751 “Pumas” with the Agusta Westland
EH101, as well as the “Esquadrilha de Helicópteros
da Marinha”, EHM of the “Marinha
Portuguesa” with its 5 Westland Super Navy Lynx Mk.95.
